Researcher Identifiers
What is a researcher identifier?
A researcher identifier (researcher ID) is a unique identification number that stays with you throughout your career and:
- Ensures your work is properly credited
- Makes your publications easy to search
- Helps you analyze your research impact
Using a researcher ID also benefits funding bodies, research institutions and universities, publishers, and other researchers by:
- Allowing funding bodies to view a researcher’s work before funding is granted and track work after funding is granted
- Helping research institutions and universities track their researchers’ publications
- Maintaining publisher's author records and manuscript submissions
ORCID
In 2017 the University of Toronto Libraries joined ORCID-CA, the ORCID Consortium in Canada.
Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID iD) assigns you a digital identifier to use with your name when you produce research. Your ORCID iD distinguishes you from other researchers and makes sure that your work is recognized.
- ORCID iD is free and registration is easy
- Link your ORCID iD with other researcher IDs, including ResearcherID, Scopus Author ID, and LinkedIn
- Populate your ORCID profile by importing your research from other databases, including Scopus and Web of Science
- Choose your privacy settings for each of your research entries
