FLC Databases and Software

The FLC offers access to resources that meet a broad range of business information needs.

We are the only source for professional, real-time market data for finance and other business-related research on the UTM campus, in addition to specialized software.  These databases and software cannot be accessed outside the lab, with the exception of FactSet.

All resources can be accessed on FLC's workstations unless otherwise noted.

Adobe Acrobat DC

Adobe Acrobat DC is a tool that enables users to convert scans, images, web pages, and files to PDFs. It also allows users to edit their PDFs. Adobe Acrobat DC is available on 5 workstations in the FLC. The workstations with Adobe Acrobat DC have a label on the right-side monitor. 

Users can access Adobe Acrobat DC by double-clicking on their PDF file.

Bloomberg (3 terminals for student use + 1 terminal for teaching)

Bloomberg provides global financial and business information on market sectors such as equities, indices, derivatives, commodities and futures, currencies, industries and more.  It offers detailed, comprehensive coverage of 45,000+ public companies and includes fundamental data on 15,000 global indices.  It also offers tools for screening, modelling, and portfolio management, as well as Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) analytics.  Bloomberg also offers an Excel plug-in to support data downloads and financial analysis .

Bloomberg also offers a certification program called Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC).  Certification is free for all UTM students but must be completed on a Bloomberg terminal.  BMC takes approximately 8 hours to complete.

FactSet

FactSet offers comprehensive data and analytics on global financial and economic markets and companies. It includes financial data on 70,000+ public and private companies worldwide, with historical coverage for developed markets from the 1980s and for emerging markets from the 1990s. It also offers close to 2,000 historical financial metrics data items for 70+ countries, and historical financial data on 5,000 global indices, as well as fixed income, commodities, alternative investments markets and more.

Within the FLC, you can access an Excel plug-in that facilitates the use and analysis of data downloaded from FactSet. However, FactSet also offers off-campus access to its database through a free, individual FactSet Connect account. Please note that individual FactSet Connect accounts do not include the Excel plug-in. 

To request your own FactSet Connect account, please email the FLC and provide the following information:

  • Your first name and last name
  • Your UofT email address (e.g. some.student@mail.utoronto.ca)
  • Your program of study (e.g. Commerce, MBiotech)
  • Your expected date of graduation (e.g. June 2019)

Your request will be processed within five business days. You will receive two emails from FactSet:

  • one email will provide you with your FactSet Connect user ID and temporary password
  • the other will provide instructions for setting up your account and downloading the required Citrix software

@RISK

@RISK is an Excel plug-in for risk analysis using Monte Carlo Simulation.

Sustainalytics

Sustainalytics is a database of ratings and analysis of corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance.  The FLC subscription provides coverage of approximately 2500 large-cap companies listed on the MSCI's Developed and Emerging Markets indices.

Use Sustainalytics to research specific companies or to screen and rank companies based on their ESG performance.  

Rotman Interactive Trader (RIT)

RIT is order-driven market simulation software, typically used in conjunction with a course.  A variety of cases can be deployed that allow students to under the risks and opportunities associated with financial securities and trading strategies.

QuickBooks Online Accountant

QuickBooks Online Accountant is Canada's leading small-business accounting software. It includes modules for bookkeeping, invoicing and payroll.  QuickBooks now allows students to create their own free personal account, which can be used for off-campus access.

Intuit ProFile

Intuit ProFile is professional tax preparation software. It supports personal, corporate and trust tax filing and includes federal tax forms.  ProFile now allows students to create their own free personal account, which can be used for off-campus access.

Sage 50 (formerly Simply Accounting)

Sage 50 is small business accounting software with integrated accounting, payroll and credit card processing.

MeXL (Marketing Engineering for Excel)

MeXL is a plug-in for Excel that is used for marketing decision-making.  It provides tools for forecasting or modeling segmentation, targeting & positioning, product sales forecasting, salesforce and channel planning, and to support other marketing and advertising decisions.

STATA & SPSS

STATA and SPSS are both programs used widely for statistical analysis across all disciplines.

UTM Library Business Databases

The FLC also offers access to the following databases for business, accounting, economics, and finance research. 

These databases are also accessible through the UTM Library and can be used off-campus, with a valid UTORid. To access the database, click on the database link below, it will retrieve the library's catalogue record of the database. When you on the catalogue record page, click on the link next to the blue web box, under the Holdings section.

  • ABI/INFORM Global
    ABI/INFORM Global contains newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals. The international coverage provided by ABI/INFORM Global will give researchers a complete picture of companies and business trends around the world.
     
  • Ad$pender
    Ad$pender contains advertising expenditures for the past five years, including information by product, brand, industry, advertisers, companies, and subsidiaries.
    Note - Ad$pender only allows a maximum of 3 concurrent users.
     
  • Business Source Premier
    Business Source Premier contains the top academic journals in business, as well as industry and company reports with SWOT analysis. In addition, there are country profiles, reports, studies, career guides, background notes, forecasts, and more.
    Note - Business Source Premier is the only UTL resource where Harvard Business Review articles are accessible.
     
  • Canadian Business & Current Affairs Database
    The Canadian Business & Current Affairs Database contains comprehensive Canadian periodical collections on multiple subjects and topics. It includes scholarly journals, trade publications, magazines, reports, radio, and more.
     
  • CB Insights
    Covers venture capital & angel investment activity, with a focus on the US. Provides data on deals, investors and companies. Useful for identifying startups in a given sector and/or corporate investment trends.
    Note - Users must create an account with using their Rotman or U of T e-mail address.
     
  • CHASS
    Collection of databases maintained by Computing in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the U of T, including CANSIM I and II, Canadian Census and Trade Analyzer.
     
  • CPA Canada Standards and Guidance Collection 
    The CPA Canada Standards and Guidance Collection includes the CPA Canada Guidance collection, federal income tax materials including the Income Tax Act and court cases, as well as Excise and GST/HST materials.
     
  • EconLit: Economic Literature Index
    The major index for economics. International in coverage, EconLit covers both economic theory and its application. It is of interest to researchers, academics, and public policy professionals. EconLit is published by the American Economic Association. 
     
  • Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)
    From the Economist Intelligence Unit, country reports are updated monthly and country profiles are updated annually. Coverage of almost 200 countries.
     
  • eMarketer Pro
    eMarketer is a media and marketing data resource for digital marketing, social media, advertising, and e-commerce. It includes infographics, reports, benchmarks, articles, demographics and country information from a range of trusted data sources.
     
  • EMIS (Emerging Markets Information Service)
    The focus of this database is on companies and industries in emerging markets. Company information sources include directories, profiles (see MarketLine reports in particular), and news. Industry information includes analyses and reports - look for reports from BMI, Marketline, and Budde. TechNavio reports on emerging technology are also available here but no new reports from this provider have been added after Nov 24, 2017.
    Note - To access the database, click on the blue 'Client Login' button, select 'My Full Subscription' (or all boxes) and the blue 'Continue' button.
     
  • Factiva
    A global news and business information service. Factiva contains a premier collection of resources from news media, web media, social media, and multimedia. News media resources include newspapers, trade press, magazines, newswires, and press releases.
    Note - Only 20 simultaneous users are allowed concurrently. If you encounter an error message, or a message indicating the maximum number of users has been reached, try again later. Please also log-out when finished with this database. 
     
  • Frost & Sullivan
    Frost & Sullivan provides access to international market and technology research and analysis in 15 major sectors ranging from healthcare and ICT to telecom and transportation, with a focus on new market opportunities and disruptive technologies.
     
  • Global Market Information Database (GMID) (also known as Passport GMID or Euromonitor)
    Industry analysis, statistics, and trends for 20 consumer-facing industries and companies. Includes company profiles, trend briefings, as well as market data, including market share and forecasts.
     
  • Global Financial Data
    Global Financial Data includes long-term historical data for stock prices, market indices; total return data on stocks, bonds, and bills; interest rates; exchange rates; inflation rates; bond indices; commodity indices and prices; consumer price indices; GDP; sector indices; treasury bill yields; wholesale price indices; and unemployment rates. Coverage for over 200 countries.
    Note - Requires registration, make sure to select Academic under New Member Accounts to access the Global Financial database as well as the US Stocks subscription.
     
  • IBISWorld
    The self-proclaimed "largest provider of industry information in the U.S." Use this resource for industry research and analysis. Includes industry research reports for Canada, the US, and the world. Search by keyword or industry code, or simply browse the report listings.
     
  • Investext
    A database of sell-side investment research available on the Thomson ONE platform. Investext includes reports on companies and industries produced by analysts from investment banks, brokerage houses, and research firms. Research suppliers include JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, and RBC Capital Markets and specialized boutique investment and market research firms. Coverage of industries where private companies are key players may be limited.
    NOTE - Investext requires IE Explorer (versions 7 and 8; version 9 not supported); Firefox, Chrome, and Safari are not supported as browsers). Thomson ONE is available on all FLC workstations.
     
  • Key Business Ratios
    A Dun & Bradstreet database of ratio and industry norms data for public and private companies in over 800 sectors. Can filter by industry and asset ranges to generate benchmark performance data for a company.
     
  • LexisNexis Academic
    International newspapers, company information, and screenings.
     
  • MarketResearch.com Academic
    This database aggregates market research from multiple vendors. Reports providers to look for include Kalorama Information (healthcare & pharma), Freedonia (manufactured goods & industries), Packaged Facts (consumer-facing industries and packaged goods), and Simba (publishing & education).
     
  • Mergent Online
    Company data for 35,000+ U.S. and International public companies. Includes SEC (US) and SEDAR (CDN) filings, as well as current and historical annual reports. Supports analysis of multiple companies. Also includes global private company data for companies which can be used to generate lists of companies by geography, sector, sales, etc.
     
  • Mergent Archives
    Mergent Archives is an online database featuring a vast, indexed collection of more than a century’s worth of global corporate and industry related documents. This collection contains hundreds of thousands of reports covering over 100 countries and industries. Mergent Archives uses a reliable and easy-to-navigate system designed to meet your historical research needs.
     
  • OECD iLibrary
    Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's online library for books, papers and statistics, and the gateway to OECD's analysis and data since 1998.
     
  • Passport GMID
    Also, know as Euromonitor, this database contains reports and statistics for consumer-facing industries from a leading market research firm. Categories covered range from pet food to travel to luxury goods to consumer health. International coverage of more than 20 industries, with focus on consumer products and services. Reports updated annually.
     
  • ProQuest (ABI/Inform and CBCA)
    ProQuest is a platform for searching multiple databases across multiple disciplines. With more than 11,000 titles, ProQuest is an interdisciplinary journal and newspaper database that is international in scope. Includes Canadian Business and Current Affairs and ABI/Inform. 
     
  • Print Measurement Bureau/Vividata(PMB)
    Formerly Print Measurement Bureau, "includes information on Canadians' usage of over 3,500 products and services. Information includes their demographics, their attitudes, their media consumption, their retail outlets, the frequency of usage, and (when sponsored) the brands they use."
     
  • PsychINFO (ProQuest)
    Research on all areas of psychology, the behavioural sciences, and other related disciplines.
     
  • Sage Research Methods
    Sage Research Methods aggregates book, journal and reference content and supports the creation of custom reading lists on specific topics. A recommended starting point for exploring, selecting and learning about the research process and various research methods.
     
  • SEDI (Insider Trading Activity)
    Use SEDI to find information on insider (executive) trading activity of Canadian companies.
     
  • SimplyAnalytics
    Create thematic maps and tables using 1000s of Canadian and US demographic and psychographic variables, as well as business point data from Dun & Bradstreet. Business lists and other data can be exported as Excel files as well as maps. No GIS experience needed.
    Note - Users can create a U of T email to save their maps and data.
     
  • Thomson ONE (Investext) (must use IE browser to view)
    Provides forecasts and analysis based on research reports from over 980 firms, and covering more than 30,000 companies worldwide. Internet Explorer (IE versions 7 and 8 only. There are also a limited number of users that may access Investext at one time).
    Note - A library database recommended for use within the FLC because of limited browser compatibility. Only compatible with Internet Explorer 11 or lower.
     
  • TSX eReview
    A monthly digest of trading activity and corporate information for companies listed on the TSX.
     
  • Vault Career Insider
    Career guides and job descriptions, resume and interview preparation tips, etc. Free registration is required.
