Overview

iClickers are the institutionally supported classroom response system. They operate in the 900 MHz frequency range and there is no interference with other devices that operate at 2.4GHz, such as Wi-Fi signals. They can operate in large lecture halls with a range of 200 - 300 feet and can be used to support student responses in courses of all sizes. More information about iClickers is provided below.

The University of Toronto Mississauga Library offers basic training for faculty and TAs on how to use the iClicker system, as well as consultation regarding best practices in the use of classroom response technologies.

Using iClicker with Quercus

Integrating iClicker 7 with Quercus (Recommended):

The iClicker integration with Quercus allows students to register their iClicker remotes directly within Quercus and streamlines data transfer between the Quercus Gradebook and iClicker. You will need to ensure that your Quercus course is published prior to setting up the integration. Use the Instructions on how to set up iClicker 7 with the Quercus for the steps you need to follow. If you have any questions or if you need help, please get in touch.

Note: If you are planning on updating your Mac OS to Catalina, there are a few additional steps you will need need to take. More information can be found at the link below.

How to use your iClicker for students

Below are some video to help students get started using the iClicker remote.

How to register your iClicker remote in Quercus

How to use your iClicker remote:

NOTE:  If the student handheld iClicker remote flashes red, this means that the instructor has closed the voting window or that an instructor base unit is not present.

Instructions for students to change the frequency of their iClickers to match the instructor base station frequency (only change if notified by instructor)

NOTE: The frequency on iClicker remotes cannot be changed unless there is an active polling session. Therefore, instructors must start a session before the frequency on a student handheld remote can be updated.

The default frequency code for all instructor base units is 'AA'.  If the instructor changes the frequency of the base unit (students will need to be notified of the new frequency at the beginning of class), students can follow these instructions to update their iClicker frequency so that it will match that of the base unit.

  • Press and hold the ON/OFF button until the powerlight flashes.
  • Enter the 2-key frequency code provided by the instructor (e.g., if the instructor changes the base unit frequency to ‘BB’ on the base unit, then students will need to change their handheld remote frequency to 'BB").

More information is provided on the iClickers for Students and iClicker Support webpage.
